Things To Watch Out For When Configuring Outlook 2010 For Yahoo Mail
Outlook 2010 is here and is gaining wide acceptance. And all of us Yahoo Outlook 2010 fans are anxious to get them working together. Fortunately, it is quick and easy to configure Yahoo Mail in Outlook 2010 access, once you know how it is done.
But from the messages I’ve received, and the posts I’ve seen online, lots of folkshave been tripped up by one or more of those issues. Let’s talk about a three of the mistakes that users tend to make when trying to make Outlook 2010 and Yahoo Mail work together:
1. Trying to use an Unsupported Version of Yahoo Mail
Yahoo won’t let you connect to your free Yahoo Mail account with any mail program including Outlook. I’ve heard various explanations for why this is so, but all that really matters is they do.
To make a Yahoo Outlook 2010 connection, you are required to upgrade your regular Yahoo Mail account into a Mail Plus account or a Business Mail account. Unless you can name a specific reason you need a Business Mail account, I strongly recommend Yahoo Mail Plus.
This upgrade is pretty painless. You can keep your current email address and keep working the way you always have. From our perspective, the only significant change in Mail Plus is the ability to connect with Outlook. But it does cost you a little bit of money ($19.95/year, or $1.66/month) in exchange for the big convenience of getting your Yahoo mail in Outlook.
2. Trying to Use an Incompatible Protocol
We need to lapse into nerd talk here for a minute. Users with some knowledge in this kind of thing try to set up a Yahoo IMAP connection, because the IMAP protocol is ideal for this kind of task.
But Yahoo doesn’t support IMAP connections. Instead, they rely on POP3 connections. The POP3 protocol isn’t as capable of advanced functions as IMAP, but it works just fine for sending and receiving Yahoo mail using Outlook 2010.
3. Guessing at Some of the Settings
While anyone can set up this connection once they know how, the correct settings to use aren’t intuitively obvious to most people. As a result, they get one or more of the fiddly little setting wrong, and the whole project falls down.
That’s why working with instructions from someone who has already set this up many times. Doing so will save you lots of anxiety. Surely you don’t want to spend hours messing around with this trying to get it just right on your own.
Now you’ve seen the three major issues I’ve seen when people try to make a Outlook 2010 Yahoo Mail connection. Getting it right is doable and pretty simple, when you have the right help.
